"CELEBRATE AVIATION HISTORY MONTH IN NOVEMBER... HOLD A DRAWING FOR AN AIRPLANE RIDE OVER YOUR SCHOOL.

1 Cliche Contest. In honor of National Cliche Day, November 3, sponsor a rap contest with a prize for the rapper who most cleverly incorporates cliches into a rap.

2 Bird's Eye View. Celebrate Aviation History Month in November by posting aerial shots of your school and community on the bulletin board and holding a drawing for an airplane ride over your school at lunch provided by a local private pilot.

3 When I Grow Up. Sponsor a "What I want to be when I grow up" essay contest as part of National Kid's Goal Setting Week, November 3-7. Invite students to attend a goal-setting workshop after school to learn how to set goals and why it is important to do so.

4 Sponsor 8 Family. Work with your county family services office or school counselors to provide a Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings for a family in need. Collect items such as green beans, rolls, sweet potatoes, cranberries, pumpkin, and so forth, along with cash donations that can be used to buy a gift certificate to a local grocery store for the perishable items.

Eerie Eyeballs

Yields approximately 9 dozen bite-sized eyeballs

3 oz lemon gelatin (can be sugar-free)
1 cup hot water
1/2 cup miniature marshmallows
1 cup pineapple juice
8 oz cream cheese (can be lowfat/Neufchatel)
1 cup mayonnaise (can be fat-free)

Dissolve lemon gelatin in 1 cup water in double boiler, add marshmallows and stir to melt. Remove from heat. Add pineapple juice and cream cheese. Beat until well blended. Cool slightly. Fold in mayo. If you have a truffle candy mold or round ice cube trays, pour the mixture in the molds and leave to set in the fridge. Before starting with Halloween, let's not forget about one of the most important holidays of October, World Vegetarian Day.

This celebration is always held on October 1st, and it encourages people to eat vegetables and fruits, and forget for a day about meat. This holiday was first observed in1977 and brought together people from all over the world, spreading awareness to the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle.

The vegetarian path was chosen either for the healty life it offers, or from the conviction that animals should not be killed.

Therefore, World Vegetarian Day promotes the principles of a healty life and environment, and moreover, joy and compassion for animals.

SEPTEMBER 29: CONFUCIUS DAY

Confucius, translated as "Kong Fuzi" or "Master Kong" was one of the most famous Chinese thinkers and social philosophers, whose teachings had influences from the East Asian life.

The philosophy of Confucius was based on morality, either personal or governmental, sincerity and , most of all, on justice. This values became more important in China than any other doctrines of the time (Legalism and Daoism). All his thoughts were developed in a philosophy system called Confucianism, introduced in Europe by Jesuit Matteo Ricci.

This teachings are known primarily through the Analects of Confucius, an interesting collection of "brief aphoristic fragments", compiled many years after he died. Modern historians do not believe that any specific documents can be said to have been writen by Confucius, but for nearly 2,000 years he was thought to be the editor or author of all the Five Classics such as the Classic of Rites, and the Spring and Autumn Annals.

The founder of National Grandparents Day is Marian H. McQuade, a simple housewife from Fayette County, in West Virginia. This holiday is celebrated every year on the first Sunday after the Labor Day.

The main reason for establishing this unusual holiday was the cause of lonely elderly living in nursing homes. Another reason was the hope to persuade the grandchildren to appreciate the wisdom of their grandparents.

Therefore, in 1978, President Jimmy Carter proclaimed Grandparents Day as a national holiday.

Celebrated on the first Monday in September, Labor Day is a holiday hold in honor of the worker. Therefore, it is also known as "workingman's holiday".

The holiday is dedicated to people in respect and appreciation for their work in or outside of the home, union or non-union, big company, small companies, or government; better said for anyone who works in the society and for the society. As long as you work, this holiday is just for you and for the results of your work.

The origins of the American Labor Day can be traced back to the Knights of Labor in the United States and a parade organized by them on September 5, 1882 in New York City. They were inspired by an annual labor day parade held in Toronto, Canada. In 1884 another parade was held, and the Knights passed resolutions to make this an annual event. Other labor organizations (and there were many), but notably the affiliates of the International Workingmen's Association favored a May 1 holiday. With the event of Chicago's Haymarket riots in early May of 1886, president Grover Cleveland believed that a May 1 holiday could become an opportunity to commemorate the riots. Thus, fearing that it might strengthen the socialist movement, he quickly moved in 1887 to support the position of the Knights of Labor and their date for Labor Day.

Labor Day has been celebrated on the first Monday in September in the United States since the 1880s. The September date has remained unchanged, even though the government was encouraged to adopt May 1 as Labor Day, the date celebrated by the majority of the world. Moving the holiday, in addition to breaking with tradition, could have been viewed as aligning the U.S. labor movements with internationalist sympathies.

Labor Day is generally regarded simply as a day of rest and, unlike May Day, political demonstrations are rare. Forms of celebration include picnics, barbecues, fireworks displays, water activities, and public art events. Families with school-age children take it as the last chance to travel before the end of summer. Some teenagers and young adults view it as the last weekend for parties before returning to school.

One of the largest modern traditions of Labor Day in the United States is the annual telethon of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, hosted by Jerry Lewis to fund research and patient support programs for the various diseases grouped as muscular dystrophy. The telethon raises tens of millions of dollars each year. In 2005, despite the recent catastrophe caused by Hurricane Katrina, nearly $55 million was raised over 21 hours.

Skyscrapers day is the perfect time of the year to admire the world's tallest buildings and appreciate their special architecture. A new reason for a holiday.

A skyscraper is a very tall, continuously habitable building. Although there is no official definition, a height of approximately at least 150 metres or 500 feet is often used as a criterion for a building to qualify as a skyscraper. Other criteria like shape and appearance also affect whether or not a building is considered a skyscraper.

The word skyscraper was first applied to such buildings in the late 19th century, reflecting public amazement at the tall buildings being built in New York City. The structural definition of the word skyscraper was refined later by architectural historians, based on engineering developments of the 1880s that had enabled construction of tall multi-story buildings. This definition was based on the steel skeleton—as opposed to constructions of load-bearing masonry, which passed their practical limit in 1891 with Chicago's Monadnock Building. Philadelphia's City Hall, completed in 1901, still holds claim as the world's tallest load-bearing masonry structure. The steel frame developed in stages of increasing self-sufficiency, with several buildings in New York and Chicago advancing the technology that allowed the steel frame to carry a building on its own. Today, however, many of the tallest skyscrapers are built more or less entirely with reinforced concrete. In the United States today, it is a loose convention to draw the lower limit on what is a skyscraper at 150 metres. Elsewhere, though, a shorter building will sometimes be referred to as a skyscraper, especially if it is said to "dominate" its surroundings. Thus, calling a building a skyscraper will usually, but not always, imply pride and achievement.

Even if the world is built for right handers, August 13th is only fo lefties.

Did you know that right handed people use their left side of the brain, while left handed people use the right side. And so, only left handed people are in their right mind.

Folklore and Superstitions

For thousands of years, the Devil has been associated with the left hand in various ways and is normally portrayed as being left-handed in pictures and other images. In the seventeenth century it was thought that the Devil baptised his followers with his left-hand and there are many references in superstitions to the "left-hand side" being associated with evil. As an example, in France it was held that witches greet Satan "avec le bras gauche" or with the left hand. It is also considered that we can only see ghosts if we look over our left shoulder and that the Devil watches us over the left shoulder.

Evil spirits lurk over the left shoulder - throw salt over this shoulder to ward them off. In Roman times, salt was a very valuable commodity, giving rise to the word "salary" and was considered a form of money at the time. If salt was spilled, that was considered very bad luck, that could only be avoided by throwing some of the spilled salt over your left shoulder to placate the devil.

Joan of Arc (burned at the stake in 1431 for being a heretic and a witch) was not necessarily left-handed, she may have been depicted in this way to make her seem evil.

Getting out of bed with the left foot first means that you will have a bad day and be bad tempered . i.e. getting out of bed the wrong side.

A ringing in the right ear means that someone is praising you. In the left ear it means that someone is cursing or maligning you.

An itchy right palm means that you will receive money. An itchy left palm means you will have to give money.

Wedding rings worn on the third finger of the left hand originated with the Greeks and Romans, who wore them to fend of evil associated with the left-hand

When dressmaking it's believed to be bad luck to sew the left-hand sleeve onto a garment before the right sleeve.

When leaving to go on a journey, if your right foot itches you're bound to have a good journey. If your left foot itches it will end in sorrow.

It is thought to be bad luck to pass a drink to another person with your left-hand or anti-clockwise around a table.

This is an easy no-bake raspberry cream cheese pie. A delicious summer pie.

INGREDIENTS:

1 package (4-serving size) vanilla instant pudding mix, prepared
1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
1/2 teaspoon almond flavoring
1 baked pie shell, 9-inch
1 package (4 serving size) raspberry flavored gelatin
1 cup boiling water
1 package frozen raspberries (10 ounces)
2 tablespoons sugar
1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

PREPARATION:

Prepare pudding mix according to directions on package. Blend in cream cheese with electric hand-held mixer. Add almond flavoring and stir until smooth. Pour into baked pie shell; refrigerate.

Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Drain juice from thawed raspberries and add water to make 3/4 cup of liquid. Add to dissolved gelatin. Stir in sugar; chill mixture until slightly congealed. Fold in drained raspberries and nuts. Spread raspberry layer carefully over pudding and cream cheese layer in pie shell.
Chill raspberry pie until firm.

July 1st, 2006 is to celebrate Canada Day, Creative Ice Cream Flavors Day, Jokes Day and Build A Scarecrow Day.

In this proud day, Canada is celebrating every year the establishment of the federal government and the beginning of Home Rule. Previously known as Dominion Day and Confederation Day, 1st of July has an interesting history. This holiday was established back in 1879 under the name Dominion Day.
There is no record of organized ceremonies after this first anniversary, except for the 50th anniversary of Confederation in 1917, at which time the new Centre Block of the Parliament Buildings, under construction, was dedicated as a memorial to the Fathers of Confederation and to the valour of Canadians fighting in the First World War in Europe.

The next celebration was held in 1927 to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Confederation. It was highlighted by the laying of the cornerstone by the Governor General of the Confederation Building on Wellington Street and the inauguration of the Carillon in the Peace Tower.

Since 1958, the government has arranged for an annual observance of Canada's national day with the Secretary of State of Canada in charge of the coordination.

Another highlight was Canada's Centennial in 1967 when Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II attended the celebrations with Parliament Hill again being the backdrop for a large scale official ceremony.

The format changed in 1968 with the addition of multicultural and professional concerts held on Parliament Hill including a nationally televised show. The celebration was cancelled in 1976 but was reactivated in 1977.

A new formula was developed in 1980 whereby the National Committee.

On October 27, 1982, July 1st which was known as "Dominion Day" became "Canada Day".
